The Undelete Desktop Client

Congratulations! Your computer is now equipped with the Undelete Desktop Client. This powerful utility provides a virtual "safety net" for the files you use and store on network file servers. Use the Undelete Desktop Client to recover deleted files and to retrieve earlier versions of your Microsoft Office files.

The Undelete Desktop Client is similar to the Windows Recycle Bin with one critical difference — it allows you to recover files you’ve deleted from network file servers, something the Windows Recycle Bin cannot do.

With the Undelete Desktop Client, not only you can you recover deleted files, but you can also retrieve previous versions of common Microsoft Office files, like Word documents and Excel workbooks. Click here for more information about retrieving earlier versions of Microsoft Office files.

You will notice your Windows desktop now has a new icon labeled Undelete 2009 Desktop Client. The icon looks like this:

Double-click the Undelete Desktop Client icon to open the Undelete Desktop Client. You'll see a display similar to this:

When you first start the Undelete Desktop Client, the Tree View pane shows any network file shares you have mapped, just like Windows Explorer.

This icon shows mapped file shares on computers that are running Undelete Server Edition. You can view the files you have deleted from these shares by double-clicking the icon and navigating to the deleted files.

This icon shows mapped file shares on computers that are not running Undelete Server Edition, or the computer is currently unavailable.

In some cases, neither of these icons is displayed. If so, use the Connect Network Folder option on the Undelete Desktop Client toolbar and enter login credentials as prompted to connect to your network file shares.

Follow these easy steps to recover your deleted files from network file servers:

  1. In the Tree View pane, navigate to the folder where the file you want to recover was stored before it was deleted.
  2. In the File Information pane, find the file you want to recover, and right-click on it.
  3. From the menu displayed, select one of these options:

Now that your computer has the Undelete Desktop Client, you have two methods for recovering deleted files. You can continue to use the Windows Recycle Bin to recover files you have deleted from this computer, but now you also have the Undelete Desktop Client to recover files you have deleted from network file servers. Remember this the next time you have one of those "oops!" moments.
