The Space Reclamation feature writes zeros to unused blocks of free space on your volumes. This zeroing out of free space allows for the reclaiming of that space within your virtual environment. Although V-locity can write zeros to unused blocks of free space on your volumes, it cannot however, compact a virtual disk file on the physical host. Other tools, such as with live migration solutions, must be used to perform a compaction of the free space. V-locity Host has the capability to perform a compaction on the Hyper-V platform.
Automatic Space Reclamation allows V-locity to automatically zero out unused free space when enabled on selected volumes. Using InvisiTasking, CogniSAN and V-Aware technologies, V-locity can perform Space Reclamation without any negative performance impact to your virtual environment.
Follow these steps to open the Space Reclamation page of the Volume Properties console and enable or disable Space Reclamation on one or more volumes:
Open the Volume Properties task group in the Quick Launch pane and select Automatic Optimization.
Tip: You can also use the Volume Properties button
to open the Volume properties page and click on the Automatic Optimization tab in the left pane.
Select one or more volumes in the Computer pane.
Select or clear the Enable Space Reclamation on the selected volumes checkbox and click OK to save your changes and close the Volume Properties console, or click Apply to save your changes and keep the Volume Properties console open.
When automatic Space Reclamation is enabled on a volume, you can optionally use the Automatic File System Performance Timeline control to specify times when automatic Space Reclamation and Automatic Defragmentation will not be allowed to run (This exclusion timeline is honored by BOTH Automatic Space Reclamation and Automatic Defragmentation at the same time).
Keep in mind that both Automatic Space Reclamation and Automatic Defragmentation, with the exclusive InvisiTasking, CongniSAN and V-Aware technologies, work invisibly in the background, and will not negatively impact other processes on the system.
Note: When Automatic Defragmentation is not enabled on a volume, fragmentation increases, and performance suffers. For this reason, specifying a time for Automatic Defragmentation to not run is comparable to specifying a time when you want your computer’s performance to be less optimum. If you exit from V-locity (or even log off your computer) while Automatic Defragmentation is running, it will continue running as needed.
Since V-locity runs unnoticed in the background, there usually is no need to turn it off. However, for rare cases such as benchmarking where you do not want the benefits from IntelliWrite, Automatic Defragmentation or Automatic Space Reclamation to skew the results, you must disable these features for the applicable time needed for benchmarking. Although IntelliWrite must be manually disabled, the Automatic File System Performance Timeline, located in the volume properties pane, allows you to specify exclusion periods when both Automatic Defragmentation and Automatic Space Reclamation will be turned off.
The colored horizontal bars in the Automatic File System Performance Timeline represent periods of time, and the colors show periods when Automatic Defragmentation and Automatic Space Reclamation is turned on or off. In cases where more than one volume has been selected, any conflicting exclusion periods are displayed in a separate color as shown in the legend at the bottom of the timeline display. These time periods are shown in the timeline as "mixed settings".
You can turn Automatic Defragmentation and Space Reclamation on or off based on a weekly pattern, or based on specific dates you choose. When the weekly pattern option is chosen, the timeline shows a full week in one-hour increments. When the specific date option is chosen, use the calendar control to specify one or more days to display in the timeline.
After selecting the range of time displayed in the timeline, left-click and drag your cursor on any of the segments in the display to alternately enable and disable Automatic Defragmentation and Automatic Space Reclamation for that time period. You can quickly select any time span from a single hour to several days at once.
Use the Options button at the bottom of the Timeline to include or exclude all of the time period shown in the timeline, to change between a 12-hour and 24-hour clock, and to customize the color used to show the exclusion period.
Manual Space Reclamation allows you to manually write 0’s to unused blocks of free space on your volumes.
There are several ways by which to start manual Space Reclamation. Each of the options below will immediately start a Space Reclamation job on a selected volume:
Keep in mind that a manual Space Reclamation does not utilize InvisiTasking, CogniSAN or V-Aware technologies and can cause a significant amount of system resource consumption. It is recommended that you enable Automatic Space Reclamation on all volumes and allow V-locity to automatically write 0’s to unused blocks of free space. Using InvisiTasking, CogniSAN and V-Aware technologies, V-locity can perform Space Reclamation without any negative performance impact to your virtual environment.
